We don't just talk about sustainability. — Sustainability
We believe longer-lasting devices are better for the planet. That's why many of our models - including our feature phones - resist dust and water. Self-repair is available on selected devices. And when a device's life ends, every model can be recycled through our take-back programme, now running in 33 countries.
“In a fast-moving industry and a challenging global environment, we stay focused on what matters most: creating technology that is purposeful, accessible, secure, and useful in everyday life.”
Jean Francoise-Baril
HMD Executive Chairman
HMD Sustainability Report 2025
We talk a lot about sustainability. But talk means nothing unless it's backed up by action.
Actions speak loudest
People
We aim to make a positive impact on people and local communities by creating a safe and inclusive working environment.
Planet
Every product we design for durability and repairability is also a step toward our emission reduction target. See our progress here.
Practices
Our processes follow global standards, helping us work effectively with our partners and make progress toward our goals.
Platinum status for sustainability
We got Platinum status from EcoVadis in 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026, putting us in the top 1% of businesses assessed for sustainability performance across environmental, social, and ethical practices.
You can’t spell “sustainability” without “R”
It’s a metaphor. Keep reading – we promise it will make sense.
“R” number 1: Repair
If your car breaks down, you don’t drive it straight to the junkyard – you try to get it fixed. So why should you have to buy a brand-new phone if the screen cracks, or if the battery runs dry?
We’re making phones that you can fix yourself. You don’t need a degree in engineering – just some tools, spare parts, and free-to-access guides from GSMnet.¹
“R” number 2: Reduce
As people, we want more. More from life, more from others, more from the things we buy. Sometimes, “more” is fine. Other times, “less” is better.
Packaging for globally available smartphones is made from certified FSC-Mix materials. To help cut e-waste, we stopped including wall charger plugs to some of our devices, since most homes have those already. By the end of 2025, this move avoided the production of 250 tonnes of potential e-waste.2
“R” number 3: Recycle
We build recycled content into many of our smartphones and their packaging - see our environmental profiles for details.
Thanks to the recovery programmes we run, some parts can be recycled at end of life. What's old can become new.
We don’t limit sustainable actions to things starting with “R”. That would be crazy.
Less carbon. More accountability.
We're cutting emissions where it matters most: how our phones are made, shipped, and used. Since 2022, we've reduced total emissions by over 42% – including a 29% drop in 2025 alone. See the 2025 GHG emissions progress summary report.
Our Near Term target was approved by the Science Based Targets initiative.3 Read more in our 2025 Sustainability report.
