Can I cancel the subscription but keep my HMD Mobile service active?

Upon canceling your device subscription, you will receive a termination notice from newsim GmbH, which provides the SIM card services, per section 4.4 of the HMD Mobile services contract. Your HMD Mobile plan will be valid until the end of the current month. Plus, the same plan will be active for free during the next month, giving you plenty of time to port-out your phone number to another operator, if you choose to do so.
