More human tech at MWC 2025! Here’s what you missed from our incredible announcements
From smartphones for teens to new FC Barcelona phones – We celebrate better technology for all!
Today we took a trip to Spotify Camp Nou to announce our next set of amazing products as part of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) exhibition show. We showed a sneak peek into so many incredible things coming up for us, including new products like wireless earbuds and musical feature phones, and new initiatives like our family range that HMD customers and family directly helped frame and build.
It has been a year since announcing our first set of HMD products and we couldn’t be prouder of the year that we have had. We were extremely lucky and grateful to share the room at Spotify Camp Nou with so many amazing partners, media, creators and customers who all got the chance to reflect on how far HMD have come and the exciting journey ahead. Those who attended had the opportunity to touch and feel the new and upcoming products and as well enjoy a 360-degree immersive experience.
Parents called out for help with their children and smartphones, and we answered.
Recently, we conducted a survey of nearly 25,000 children and parents for our HMD Better Phone Project report.1 The results provided us with answers we expected and ones we did not, nonetheless, we knew – as mobile technology innovators – that we had a responsibility for leading a movement of change.
The study consisted of nearly 25,000 children and parents across six countries (United Kingdom, Germany, United States of America, Australia, India, and United Arab Emirates)1. The global study uncovered the sheer scale of the problem at hand, here’s what it found:
- 51% of children have been contacted online by strangers.
- One in three has been encouraged to take conversations to private chat rooms or messaging apps.
- 56% of kids report being insulted or made to feel small online.
- 40% have been sent sexual or violent content.
- 52% of children feel addicted to their screens.
In response to this study and off the back of the HMD Better Phone Project, we launched a new portfolio that will grow to include age-appropriate phones. We will continue to work with parents, children and experts to create phones that are age appropriate for teens and children that they will want to use and will provide them enhanced safety.
The new portfolio identified 3 key milestones in relation to children’s journeys with mobile technology. These touch points were the forefront of how we chose the develop technology as part of the collection:
- Under 12 years old: First Safe Connection: Building healthy digital habits early.
- 13–16-year-olds: Beginning smart journey: Gradually introducing features in a way that isn’t overwhelming.
- Over 16 years old: Adulthood Readiness: Preparing kids for open-ended tech use with years of thoughtful guidance.
The first phone in this collection is the HMD Fusion X1, a ‘first smartphone for teens.’ This phone was developed in partnership with Xplora. The phone is set to give parents full control over their teen’s first experience with a smartphone with the inbuilt Xplora subscription - starting from €4.99 per month - while still offering a device teens can be excited about.
The HMD Fusion X1 will sport many key features that have been put in place to enhance your teens safety online. These features include:
- A customizable app and internet access, allowing parents to choose no social media and internet browsing or limiting them.
- Continuous location tracking at 20 second intervals with safe zones,
- Emergency SOS calling, low battery alerts, and remote device access for parents.
- School Mode function - ensuring distractions are minimized during school hours
- All settings can be managed remotely through the Xplora app, on the parents’ own device.
The Better Phone Project is proof that change is possible when families—not corporations—lead the conversation. This is about giving parents real choices. The HMD Fusion X1 with Xplora is just the start. Together, we’re pushing for a future where kids are empowered to use technology in a safer way, and parents have the tools for added protection and peace of mind.
