5th June, 2025 – Human Mobile Devices (HMD) today announces that the HMD Fusion X1 is available to buy now—a new category of smartphone inspired by parents and experts to support a digital entry with enhanced safety for teens. Developed in partnership with Xplora, the leader in safe smart watches for children, the Fusion X1 is a phone built from the ground up to help teens explore online. It’s designed to grow with them but at a pace that feels right for your family.
More than half of children have been regularly contacted online by someone they don’t know, new research from HMD and Perspectus Global has revealed. One in three children has been asked to take conversations to private messaging apps, and nearly 40% have been exposed to harmful online content, including sexual or violent material.1 The results have emerged from a global survey of 25,000 children and adults in the UK, US, Germany, India, Australia and UAE. Families are calling for safer, more manageable smartphone experiences for their children.
For nearly a year, HMD has worked with thousands of parents and experts through The Better Phone Project, co-creating solutions based on what families truly need. Parents asked for better options—Now, after working with parents and teens across 84 countries, HMD is launching two new devices in 2025, starting with the HMD Fusion X1, designed to help teens build healthy digital habits while staying more protected.
The reality is that no single device can fully protect children from the challenges of growing up in a digital world. That’s why HMD is going further with its plan of integrating real-time protection against harmful content with SafeToNet. Planned to launch later this year on HMD phones, HMD will be the first mobile phone provider to use this technology, developed in partnership with SafeToNet, which provides on-device AI-powered protection—automatically detecting and blocking harmful content before it reaches the user, without relying on external apps that can be bypassed. HMD believes that empowering kids with the right tech at the right time is crucial. The Better Phone Project isn’t just about creating devices with enhanced safety—it’s about challenging the status quo.
"At HMD, we believe technology should empower young people to explore the digital world safely and confidently. The Fusion X1 is a direct response to what families told us they needed: a smartphone that supports healthy digital habits without sacrificing style or freedom whilst giving parents peace of mind. This is more than a phone—it’s a smarter first step into digital life, designed to grow with teens at a pace that’s right for them and their families."
At Xplora, our mission has always been to create safer, more balanced digital experiences for children. Partnering with HMD on the Fusion X1 lets us extend that mission into smartphones, providing teens with the freedom they seek and the protection parents' trust. Together, we’re shaping a safer, healthier digital future—one smart step at a time.
The HMD Fusion X1: A Smart First Phone
The HMD Fusion X1 is designed to help the younger generation take their first step into the digital world. With Xplora’s deeply integrated parental controls, the Fusion X1 balances digital freedom with safety:
• Social media & browser controls – instantly allow or block access, based on your rules.
• Safe calls & messaging – only trusted contacts, approved by parents. It’s easy to expand their circle when they’re ready for more and even eventually hand over full control
• GPS tracking & safety zones – alerts when the device user leave safe areas. Set up to 10 safe zones—such as home, school, a friend’s house, or their sports facility—and get instant alerts when they enter or leave
• Stay Focused Mode – limit distractions during school or bedtime
• Starts with zero apps – parents decide what gets added, and when
Parents can manage the full smartphone experience with the Xplora Guardian subscription—starting from €4.99/month—while still offering a phone teens can be excited about. The customizable app and internet access let parents choose whether to allow social media and browsing, limit them, or switch them off completely.
While safety is front and center for parents, the Fusion X1 doesn’t skimp on the features teens care about. From a powerful camera (with slo-mo selfies and gesture controls) to a sleek design and unique Smart Outfits—customizable snap-on cases that add gaming controls or better lighting 2—Fusion X1 feels like a phone made just for them.
- Selfie Slo-Mo – Capture every detail of your vibe in stunning slow motion—your best moments deserve to be replayed.
- Smart Outfits – Snap-on accessories that make Fusion X1 better than a hand-me-down phone. Choose from:
- Flashy Outfit – Snap on an LED light ring to enhance photos. Flip it for perfect selfies.
- Gaming Outfit – Add buttons and joysticks for better control and more screen space. Ergonomic and plug-and-play.
- Charging Outfit – Get 65% more power. Doubles as a stand—perfect for weekends away.
- Flashy Outfit – Snap on an LED light ring to enhance photos. Flip it for perfect selfies.
The sleek and repairable design also encourages a sense of ownership and understanding of tech. With HMD Fusion X1, replacing a cracked screen or battery is easy and can be done at home.3
Beyond Tech: A Parent-Led Movement with Experts at the Helm
Fusion X1 is more than a phone—it’s part of a movement. Backed by nearly a year of co-creation with families, the Better Phone Project revealed a clear gap in the market for phones built with parents, for teens.
As a GP and founder of Health Professionals for Safer Screens, I’ve seen the impact smartphones can have on teenage mental health (and indeed all aspects of child health from a young age). The launch of the HMD Fusion X1 is a step in the right direction. It’s reassuring to see a major manufacturer working with parents and experts to co-create a safer, more thoughtful entry point into digital life. We urgently need even more alternatives like this that strike a balance between connection and protection.
The real dangers smartphones pose to young people are plain to see—exposure to violence, pornography, self-harm, drug culture, grooming, and bullying. It's vital that we look to technology itself for part of the solution. We need to design a phone that not only gives young people access to excellent tech but also provides strong safeguards to protect their wellbeing.
As parents around the world continue to voice concerns about the impact of smartphones on children, it’s encouraging to see manufacturers like HMD stepping up with new, more child-friendly options. While there’s still a long way to go, we’re excited to see the innovation unfolding in this space and our community will be watching closely as they roll out more products in the near future.
Fusion X1 will be available in Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, UK, Denmark, Norway, Poland, and Sweden starting from June 5th. The phone comes with two outfits in the box, Casual and Flashy and additional Smart Outfits can be purchased separately. An Xplora Guardian subscription is required to unlock full parental controls- starting from €4.99 per month.
